Thanks to Energy Navigators we have a nifty new heat pump water heater! Steve from Evergreen answered the first time I called, said he could definitely fit us in before our deadline of Aug 15, then called back a couple hours later. The first time I remember going to a public library - I was in disbelief. My mom took me and I peppered her with questions, Wait, you mean, all these books, I can just borrow? Any of them? For three weeks? And then I can come back and get more? That’s crazy! Sign me up!

My feelings about Energy Navigators are similar. My friend mentioned she had contacted them. She explained, yes, they come to your house and give you a report and then it is up to you to decide what to do next. No, the report doesn’t cost anything and yes, there are incentives through Efficiency Vermont that you may be able to take advantage of. That’s crazy! Sign me up!

Shortly after I contacted them, Shannon came to my house and we discussed what my goals were and some possible ways forward. I knew I was interested in heat pumps because I used propane to heat my home, but she told me about other things to consider. She asked for electric bills and some additional information.

Following the visit she sent me a thorough and well-organized report that outlined what we had talked about and their recommendations.

Based on her recommendations, I contacted three companies that were listed in the report who installed heat pumps. Two of them came to the house. Both companies were thoughtful about finding creative solutions to heat my home.  Shannon and Jean from Energy Navigators helped me to review the proposals and gave me some follow up questions to pose to the potential contractors. From there, I received at least one new proposal from one of the companies. 

I settled on a system that met my goals and was very happy the day I turned off my propane-fueled boiler. I may well turn it on at some point this winter, but at this point, due to the fan on the inside unit, I find my house warmer even when set to a lower temperature.

Thank you to Jean and Shannon and Energy Navigators for accompanying me through this process. It was a big step, and with their help, I felt well-informed as I took it. I’ll likely be back for another project in the future.

We got a heat pump hot water heater in 2022 – no regrets! Macintyre installed a Bradford White machine. The only issue is that we also needed an electrician to set-up the proper power outlet before the install. It’s worked great so far – we always keep it on “heat pump only” which is more efficient than the hybrid with direct electric heating, and can always get sufficient hot water.
